Recommending the festival Electric Forest So what is this thing called a family I keep hearing about? Or who is carl and why the heck is everyone yelling his name? Why is everyone saying “you got what I need, but you say she’s just a friend”? Well you are hearing some of the tall tales that stem from the electric forest festival itself. One of the most notorious rumors and trends that occurs at the festival electric forest, is the reference to all of its attendees being called a family. The electric forest does its best to create an atmosphere to encourage everyone to be themselves, and to instill a sense of belonging. For reference, the best metaphor I can come up with is when will Ferrell says “everybody love everybody” in the movie semi pro. The creators of the electric forest aim to develop an atmosphere where everybody does indeed love everybody. In fact, the love that forest attendees show for one another is so strong, that they can be called a family. Only those who have experienced the festival truly know what it is like to be engaged in the family, and let me tell you from experience, it’s an incredible feeling. Once in the festival, you can hear crowds of hundreds of people screaming “CARL?” as if they were searching for someone in their group that they could not find. While nobody knows the exact origin as to where saying came from, there are many predictions, and other peoples interpretations of the story keep the fun going. Rumor has it that in the very first year the festival was held, a small group of festival goers where enjoying some nice music until suddenly they looked around and could not find their good friend carl. The group searched and searched, and yelled out his name but could not seem to find their friend anywhere. They stayed up all night until the festival closed looking for their lost friend. Eventually the time came where the festival was coming to a close and attendants had to head back to their campsites. When approaching the campsite, the group found their friend Carl passed out face first on the ground from a night of partying to hard. They decided to sneak up on him and yell “CARL” in order to wake him up from his snooze. The yells were heard by other campsites thus igniting the same calls from campsites all around thereby starting the trend. While there are many other angles of the story that people tell, this is by far the most popular one. As part of the culture of the festival, you will hear many people running around with boom boxes attached to their shoulders yelling “you, you got what I need” at the top of their lungs. The quote is from a rap song in the 90’s and is yelled to inspire worth in others, as well as provide a laugh for all those involved. Aside from the culture of the festival, there are many other aspects that make the electric forest great. First being the music lineup. Last year’s lineup, along with the 2012 lineup are two of the best lineups the electric forest has ever had. Although the lineup for this year has not yet been released, the creators have listed a few of the headliners. The most important of those is bassnectar. Bassnectar has already been listed as a headliner and is a must see if you are considering attending the fest. People from all over the world flock to the festival that bassnectar plays at during the summer because he is simply the best in the business. This act alone could be worth your entry ticket so do not miss him. Another wonderful aspect of the festival is the wide range of stages, and the wide range of music in which is played at each stage. Five of the six stages at the festival are themed in order to coordinate the type of music that is being played at the festival. Even if you are not sure if anyone you like is playing, select a genre of music and head to that stage for some entertainment. The last feature and probably the coolest aspect of the electric forest, is the grounds themselves. The festival is held in the middle of the forest, in which part is hollowed out to allow the festival to take place. Festival goers are allowed to hang hammocks in the middle of the festival in order to provide a relaxing seat while the music plays. The creators of the fest also hang lights, objects, lasers, as well as much more from the trees so that the forest lights up at night. Lastly the creators hand craft objects that can be climbed and played on in the middle of the forest. One of the areas created by the people of electric forest is called the Sherwood Forest. This is an area in which many jungle gym type structures have been built and placed strategically to allow festival goers to climb and play on. There is also a small world, in which everything you see is shrunk down to miniature size. The festival also hires little people to walk around this area to make you feel like you are a giant in a small person’s world. The electric forest has much more to offer to those who attend it then just a place for good music. It allows its attendees to have the most relaxing time possible, and gives everyone a chance to meet some new amazing people. Currently I am on my fourth year going, and I do not plan on missing another for years to come! Hope to see you there and for you to become part of the forest family! Tickets go on sale in a few weeks, they will sell out quick, but be persistent. If you do not get a ticket before the festival sells out, do not be worried. I will provide a link in the weeks to come which allows you to purchase the festival tickets for face value from those who are no longer able to attend.
